The following items can be requested as an Inter Library Loan:

  • Books we don't have
  • Journal articles (one article from a single issue)
  • Conference papers (one paper from a single set)
  • Book chapters from books we don't have (one chapter from a single book)

The following items cannot be requested as an Inter-Library loan:

  • Books/articles we already have
  • Books we have which are out on loan
  • Paper versions of e-books1
  • Copies of more than one article from a single published work2
  • Theses3
  • Books/articles from sources outside the United Kingdom

  1. If you require a paper version of an e-book which we do not hold in the Library we generally don't accept requests for these, but exceptions do apply for users with specific needs; please contact us.
  2. Due to copyright law, no more than one single chapter/article/conference paper may be requested from a single published work, e.g. from a single book, a single issue of a journal, or a single set of conference proceedings.
  3. Please use EThOS (e-theses online service) to access theses. *Some British Library systems and services, including EThOS, remain unavailable due to a major technology outage experienced by the British Library as a result of a cyber-attack. For more information, please visit the British Library’s temporary website or blog.
