Associate Reader Policy and Application

Non-members of the University may apply to join the University Library as an Associate Reader. Membership is only available to those with a genuine need to use our resources for academic research, and is subject to approval by the University Librarian.



Terms and conditions

Associate members are bound by our Terms and Conditions:

  • Associate membership does not include access to services such as inter-library loans, computing facilities or electronic resources. Guest Wi-Fi access is available to use with your own device.
  • Members must be aged 18 or over.
  • Where appropriate fees must be paid before access is granted.
  • ID must be provided before your application is processed.
  • Replacement cards cost £10.

Types of membership

Associate Reader Borrowing Membership - this entitles the user to borrow up to six items for a period of either one week or four weeks, dependent on the loan status of the book. Should the book be in high demand, there is the possibility that it may be recalled at any time. Please therefore ensure that you check your e-mails regularly.
  • This membership costs £50 per year
  • Photo ID and proof of address (within the last six months) are required
  • This membership must be renewed annually

Associate Reader Reference Only Membership - this membership gives access to the building and all print resources, but does not allow the user any borrowing rights.
  • This membership costs a one-off registration fee of £10
  • Photo ID and proof of address (within the last six months) are required
  • This membership must be renewed annually

Alumni Membership - this entitles the user to borrow up to six items for a period of either one week or four weeks, dependent on the loan status of the book. Should the book be in high demand, there is the possibility that it may be recalled at any time. Please therefore ensure that you check your e-mails regularly.
  • This membership is free of charge
  • Photo ID and graduation certificate are required
  • Initial alumni membership is for three years

Sconul Access (free of charge) Initial applications must be completed via SCONUL. Once you have received email confirmation of your Sconul application please complete the following form.

  • Sconul applications only - copy of Sconul approval email
  • Alumni applications only - copy of graduation certificate

Thank you for applying to become an Associate Reader. Your application may take up to 1 week to process.

We will contact you by email once your application has been processed, and if it is approved, we will ask you to come to the library to collect your card. If payment is required, this will be taken on collection of your library card.
